Hanamizuki is a flower of friendship in Japan. Japan originally did not have hanamizuki. It was first introduced to Japan about 100 years ago when the USA gifted hanamizuki in return for 6040 cherry trees gifted to the USA in 1912 from Japan. In 2012, the USA again gifted 3,000 dogwood saplings to Japan to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Washington D.C. cherry trees gifted from Japan in 1912.
